LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Arkansas River in Little Rock is expected to crest at 29 feet on Wednesday, June 5. As waters rise, officials want to ensure residents are prepared.
Mayor Frank Scott Jr., Public Works Director Jon Honeywell, and Emergency Management Director Matt Burks held a press conference on Thursday – addressing flood-related concerns and resources.
“We want to stress that safety is a top priority,” Scott said. “We want to be proactive in the event that things get worse.”
The city is distributing sandbags at the Public Works Complex on JE Davis Drive. Residents can pick them up from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A 24-hour, self-service sandbag station is also open at War Memorial Park. Sand and bags are provided, but residents need to bring their own shovels.
Floodwater is impacting traffic in portions of Little Rock.
Areas that are currently closed:
- River Mountain Road accessing the Two Rivers Pedestrian Bridge
- Murray Park
- Rebsamen Golf Course
- Rebsamen Park Road
On Friday morning, work on a levee will close Riverfront Drive from Cottondale Drive to Rebsamen Park Road.
If you see a street or area closed, authorities say you should not move or remove barriers to access the closed street or area.

The City of Little Rock has issued an emergency declaration. As emergency management staff works to determine the impact and obtain federal funding for repairs, they ask anyone with damage to report it via the Little Rock Police Department Telephone Reporting Unit.
