DALLAS — Cinemark is celebrating its 40th anniversary in a big way, by offering moviegoers a chance to relive seeing some of the films that would have screened when the North Texas-based movie theater chain first opened its cinemas in 1984.
And even better, the tickets for this 1984 retro series will be close to 1980s prices, as they are just $5 each.
1984 was an influential year for movies, particularly genre films, and birthed movies that would go on to spawn countless sequels, spin-offs and remakes in the decades since. Some of the movies that came out that year, just to name a few, include The Terminator, Ghostbusters and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
The movies will run daily from Monday, Aug. 12, through Sunday, Aug. 18.

· Aug. 12 – The Karate Kid
· Aug. 13 – The Terminator
· Aug. 14 – Gremlins
· Aug. 15 – Purple Rain
· Aug. 16 – Ghostbusters
· Aug. 17 – A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Last Starfighter
· Aug. 18 – Footloose, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Cinemark isn't the only North Texas-based theater celebrating 1984 however, as the Texas Theatre has been running its own 1984 series, showing movies like Sixteen Candles and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. And they're offering even cheaper tickets.
For their next 1984 screening, The NeverEnding Story at 3 p.m. this Sunday, tickets are only $1 a piece.
And if you're looking for movies a little more modern, the Texas Theatre has also been running a Class of '99 series to celebrate 25 years since 1999, widely recognized as one of the greatest years of all time for film.
Their next screening will be The Virgin Suicides at 5 p.m. this Saturday.
