Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry | Here's how to donate deer meat to a good cause

Arkansas has the country's highest food insecurity rate, but local hunters are working to make sure no one goes to bed hungry.

ARKANSAS, USA — In September, a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that nearly 19% of Arkansans suffer food insecurity, the highest rate of anywhere in the United States. A local group of hunters are working hard to fight back.

For 25 years Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry (AHFH) has been a lifeline for communities across the state, providing venison to food banks working to combat food insecurity. This unique nonprofit encourages hunters to donate their legally harvested game to help feed those in need. By working closely with meat processors, volunteers, and local food distribution organizations, AHFH turns harvested deer into nutritious meals for families who otherwise may not have food to put on the table.

Founded in 2000, AHFH was inspired by a vision to reduce food waste and strengthen the connection between hunting and community service. Since its inception, the organization has provided over 4 million meals to hungry Arkansans. Through donations from hunters, individual sponsors, and corporate partners, AHFH covers the cost of meat processing and ensures safe, high-quality protein reaches people across Arkansas.

One of AHFH’s central components is its network of participating meat processors, who work to prepare venison in compliance with health regulations. Hunters can drop off their legally harvested deer at any participating processor, where the meat is then processed, packaged, and distributed to local food pantries, shelters, and kitchens. AHFH covers processing costs through fundraising and grants, allowing hunters to donate without additional expenses.

Beyond venison donations, AHFH also conducts outreach to educate the public on responsible hunting and food donation. As part of their mission, they emphasize the importance of sustainable hunting and the powerful role hunters play in wildlife management and conservation efforts.

Each deer donated to AHFH can provide 200 servings of nutritious meat, and in a state where 1 in 5 residents faces food insecurity, the impact of these donations is profound.

With deer season in full swing, AHFH is appealing to hunters to consider donating, helping to ensure that no one in Arkansas goes to bed hungry.
