JACKSONVILLE, Ark. — Several Jacksonville puppies found themselves in a tough situation early Friday morning.
According to Jacksonville Animal Services, the puppies had "fallen into a storm drain" just before 5:00 a.m., when a wintery mix was ready to roll through the area.
But don't fear.
Jacksonville Animal Services said Saturday in a heartfelt Facebook post that, with the help of many, the puppies were rescued and are now safe.
"I just want to say how extremely proud I am of the crew at our shelter," Jacksonville Animal Services said. "Every single person at the shelter... all ran out and spent several hours going through the sewer drains to get these puppies."
Community members entered the drains despite the weather and saved the dogs.
"We could not bear the thought of something happening to them when all the rain started, so no one was going to give up until we had them," Jacksonville Animal Services said. "Even though everyone was frozen and couldn't feel their hands, and a few were crawling through nasty, wet, mushy drains, there was overwhelming happiness when we collected the puppies."
Jacksonville Animal Services said they picked up three of the same litter on the next street earlier in the day.
"It was all worth it," Jacksonville Animal Services said. "They have all been reunited and are all warm and safe. I am so thankful to have selfless people working to help the animals in our city."
