LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - What's 555 feet long by 199 feet wide, sits atop the legendary marina here in Destin, and is red white and blue all over? It could possibly be the world's largest painted American flag!
Internationally famous artist Wyland is setting out to create a Guiness Book of World Record with this painted American flag mural on top the roof of the Legendary Marine in Destin.
The impressive mural is 3.8 acres in size with the words God Bless America on it.
While it may be on a roof, it is one of the first things you'll see this summer when you head in to Destin.
“What’s nice is anybody from Arkansas is either going to drive over or fly in to the airport and drive over this Mid Bay Bridge, and as you hit the crest of the bridge, you’re going to see this giant blue building with the red and white stripes on top of it, and then you'll know you've arrived,” said Todd Royal, general manager of Legendary Marina.
The sides of the marina itself are also covered in Wyland art. It's called the Whaling Wall because the wall is covered in whales.
Wyland spent several months working on this.
The city should find out any day if the flag is large enough to be considered the world's largest painted American flag by Guinness World Record standards.
