LILBURN, Ga. — A metro Atlanta woman and World War II veteran will celebrate her 105th birthday on Friday.

Gerry Huls was born on November 1, 1919, in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. According to her daughter, C.A. Folds, she is the eldest of four children.

Before her service in World War II, Huls went to nursing school in New Hampshire. In 1942, she joined the Army Nurse Corps and was sent to the Army hospital in Mansfield, England, after she finished her time with the Nurse Corps.

She met her husband while serving, and they married in England. In 1944, she left the service and became a full-time wife and mother.

According to Folds, Huls loves knitting and sewing and "has a great affinity for animals."

"She and her little Yorkie watch Dr. Pol and other animal shows on TV every day," Folds added.

Huls has one daughter, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

"Her oldest grandson visits her every week to sing and play his guitar; it's her favorite day of the week," her daughter said.
