Arkansas sheriff's deputy shoots woman who 'did not respond' when asked to drop knife

Preliminary reports say a Pike County Sheriff's Office deputy shot and killed a 40-year-old woman after she "did not respond" to commands to drop a knife.

GLENWOOD, Ark. — Arkansas State Police is investigating the shooting death of a Pike County woman by a Pike County Sheriff's Office deputy Thursday morning on Highway 84 West near the Glenwood community.

According to authorities, the Pike County deputy responded to reports of a woman with a knife. ASP said the deputy asked the woman, later identified as 40-year-old Jennifer Provence, to drop the knife, but she "did not respond" to the commands.

Preliminary reports said that's when the deputy fired his service weapon at Provence and killed her.

Arkansas State Police CID agents are investigating the incident to determine whether the use of deadly force by the sheriff's deputy was consistent with Arkansas laws.
