Police: Suspect in custody, officer on leave after 'shootout' in Conway

A Conway police officer has been placed on administrative leave following a brief shootout between the officer and a suspect.

CONWAY, Ark. — A Conway police officer has been placed on administrative leave following a brief shootout between the officer and a suspect.

According to reports, the incident happened around 8:24 p.m. on Wednesday as officers were sent to a home on Millwood Drive in reference to a welfare check. 

Upon arrival, authorities reportedly made contact with a person who was "threatening suicide with a firearm" while inside of a vehicle. 

Police said that the person fled the area, with officers pursuing the individual. 

During the pursuit, authorities said that the person allegedly "struck a police unit" before exiting their vehicle and shooting at Conway police. 

Gunfire was then traded by the suspect involved and a Conway police officer. 

Following the incident, the suspect was taken into custody and taken to a local hospital where they received treatment. 

The investigation is ongoing and Arkansas State Police has been requested to lead the investigation.
