Police: 1 dead, 4 injured in shooting near Lake Fayetteville

Officials say they responded to the scene at around 11:15 p.m. at the Lake Fayetteville Environmental Studies Center.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — One person is dead and four others are injured after a shooting at Lake Fayetteville on Thursday evening, according to the Fayetteville Police Department (FPD).

Officers were dispatched to the Lake Fayetteville Environmental Studies Center on East Lakeview Drive at around 11:15 p.m. on Feb. 15 and found one man dead.

FPD said four other gunshot victims were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The center is at the edge of Springdale city limits, so when the Springdale Police Department heard of the shooting, they reached out to Fayetteville to investigate around 11 p.m.

Identities of everyone involved were men between 18-20, according to FPD Sgt. Stephen Mauk.

Benjamin Walker, a resident who lives close to the crime scene, was working out with his brother in the garage when they heard what they first thought was a car backfiring until the shots continued.

"We heard more shots— it sounded like a whole battle and we went outside just to see if we could see anything and then we saw cops was flying up the hill," Walker said.

Sgt. Mauk said officers will continue to patrol the area but believe the shooting to be isolated. "There are unfortunate incidents like this in any type of community our size. But Overall, this is a very, very safe community. And for the most part, this was an isolated incident."

Washington County Prosecuting Attorney Matt Durrett said it started as a fight among a large group that escalated into a shooting.
