Little Rock man to spend 15 years in federal prison for possessing ammunition

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A 46-year-old Little Rock man was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison with three years of supervised release Friday for being a felon in possession of ammunition.

James Kasmire, classified as a career criminal offender, was stopped by Sherwood police on October 20, 2020, for traveling at a high rate of speed on Jacksonville Cutoff Road.

During the traffic stop, officers said they could smell marijuana and found several open bottles of alcohol in the car.

Kasmire, the passenger of the vehicle, admitted to having marijuana in the car and was asked to step out for a search.

That's when officers found the Little Rock man with a 9mm Lugar ammunition round in his pants pocket, which Kasmire admitted belonged to him.

Sherwood police officers then searched the vehicle and found methamphetamine and over 13 grams of marijuana in the front passenger seat. Authorities also found a Star, Bonifacio Echevarria S.A. model 30M1, PPU 9mm Parabellum caliber firearm tucked between the seatbelt buckle and center console.

According to the Office of the United States Attorney Eastern District of Arkansas, Kasmire's criminal history includes violent and drug-trafficking offenses, multiple convictions for delivery of cocaine, delivery of marijuana, possession of cocaine with intent to deliver, conspiracy to deliver cocaine, possession of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, aggravated assault, third-degree domestic battery, possession of Xanax, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of hydrocodone and possession of firearms by certain persons. 

Kasmire was indicted on October 4, 2022, in a superseding indictment on one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

There is no parole in the federal system.
