GUY, Ark — The Guy-Perkins School District took the saying “be green” to a whole new level.
"We are proud to be the first fully renewable resource solar field in the state of Arkansas,” said Dr. Joe Fisher, Superintendent.
Dr. Joe Fisher finds value in going green for two reasons: to save a buck and create more opportunity for students.
"Our district has to watch the resources that we use and spend closer than other districts,” said Fisher.
The district partnered with Scenic Hill Solar to install a solar field right outside the school.
"We have an opportunity to save about $20,000 to $30,000 for this year,” said Fisher.
It’s an investment moving forward in the long run. The move will save the district about half a million dollars in 30 years.
Those dollars will help benefit students and teachers.
"It gives us the opportunity to better our buildings, work on our grounds, and create a place where our students want to come and learn," said Fisher.
The new solar field will become a new class meeting ground as teachers begin thinking up ways to incorporate it in daily lessons.
"It gives us the opportunity to work with our science teachers and students to create projects, teach them about sustainable resources, and become better stewards of the environment,” said Fisher.
Guy-Perkins School District administrators, teachers, and students invite the public to a grand ribbon ceremony Friday morning at 10 a.m.
Representatives from the Governor's office, local congressmen, and members with the Department of Education will be at the ceremony to help commemorate the event.
