Little Rock school board defers vote to close schools amid enrollment issues

The Little Rock School District is considering closing and consolidating schools as enrollment continues to decrease. Here's what we know.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — Parents from Carver Elementary School addressed the Little Rock School District (LRSD) board after the administration sent out letters announcing that the school, along with Washington Elementary, would be consolidated.

Alongside those two schools is that of Brady Elementary, which is also proposed to close. These potential closures are having an immediate impact on workers at the schools as well.

"If this proposed agenda item is passed then this will be my third time applying for my job within the last six years," said Latoya Morgan.

Morgan is the Carver school librarian. She said she has gone through this before and might have to reapply for her job again if this passes.

Along with LRSD staff and community who spoke on this, Little Rock City Director Andrea Lewis and Arkansas State Rep. Denise Ennett made their thoughts known.

"If we can get together and talk about a calendar, I'd really want to get together and get people involved on what the plan is when it comes to making decisions to close a school," said Lewis.

"This feels very disrespectful to the community not giving the community a chance to have input for the decisions you all are making for our students," said Rep. Ennett.

Several motions were made by the board members to try and decide what should be done.

The first motion was made by Vicki Hatter to defer the vote until the community could be involved, but that motion was voted down.

Afterwards, Anna Strong made a motion to defer the vote until Dec. 5, but she withdrew after several members said that wasn't enough time for parents.

Lastly, Strong made a motion to defer the vote until Dec. 19 giving the administration and parents a month to weigh in.

The motion passed unanimously.

Many changes among board members are set to take place following this meeting as this was the final one for LRSD board members Leigh Ann Wilson and Sandrekkia Morning.

Wilson did not run for reelection, while Morning resigned from her position earlier this year.

They both served five years on the board.
