ADH: Flu mortality rate highest among middle-aged adults

The Arkansas Department of Health reports an increase in the number and severity of flu cases across the state.

The Arkansas Department of Health reports an increase in the number and severity of flu cases across the state.

Dr. Jennifer Dillaha, Medical Director for Immunizations at the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH), said flu season often peaks in January or February. Despite the reported ‘widespread’ activity, she said this flu season has been less troublesome than that of 2017-2018.

“Last year was the worst flu season we have had in probably 30 years,” Dillaha said.

She attributes its severity, in-part, to a lower-than-normal flu vaccination rate.

“This year, more people are getting vaccinated,” Dillaha said. “I think that's a good thing, and I think it's going to have a beneficial effect for Arkansas.”

During the 2017-2018 season, 228 flu-related deaths were reported in Arkansas. That’s compared to 23 so far this season, which began September 30.

ADH data shows the mortality rate is highest this flu season among adults ages 45 to 64. H1N1 -- the most widely reported strain this year – tends to have a more severe effect on younger adults than it does on those over 65, according to Dillaha.

When it comes to preventing flu-related hospitalization and death, Dillaha said immunization is the strongest line of defense.

“The effect of the flu is not all or nothing,” she said. “The flu vaccine can offer some protection even if it doesn't completely keep people from getting the flu.”
