Arkansans seeing early start to allergy season

If you've been having the sniffles recently, you're not alone. Your runny nose could be thanks to pollen arriving early here in Arkansas.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — Arkansas is still in the midst of virus season, but now we are heading into another season— allergy season.

For some, those sneezes and runny noses could be from higher-than-normal pollen levels that have started earlier this year.

Phillip Harper was enjoying the beautiful weather we've been having at the Little Rock River Market, but he said it came with a price.

"I'm having to blow my nose more than I normally do," said Harper.

Typically, the winter is still virus season, but allergy season has been coming in quickly.

Dr. Jim Ingram, owner of Little Rock Allergy and Asthma Clinic said that the springtime is the busiest season for his clinic.

Most recently, people have been dealing with certain tree pollens. Dr. Ingram said right now, cedar pollen is what is affecting people.

Soon tree pollen and grass pollen will become prominent.

While over-the-counter allergy medicine can be good to treat the symptoms Dr. Ingram said there are other options that can help symptoms long term.

"And if those aren't keeping you under control that's when I would suggest seeing a board-certified allergist to see what you are allergic to and what you can do about it," he added.

One of those options is allergy injections. Dr. Ingram said they are for people who deal with allergies year-round and want consistent relief.
