DOVER, Ark. (KTHV) - The Arkansas State Police are en route to help investigate a shooting that took place in Pope County.

The Arkansas State Police were requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting by the Pope County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to an armed disturbance call in Dover near the 2000 block on Morgan Road.

Deputies said that when they arrived they were confronted by 83-year-old Quinton Phillips, who was holding a gun. They said they made verbal commands to drop the gun, but the suspect moved into cover and began opening fire towards the deputies.

The report said that "at least one" deputy returned fire where the man was struck. He was taken to the St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville where he died due to his injuries.

A spokesperson with the Arkansas State Police said they would release no more information, but that the investigation into the officer-involved shooting is ongoing.

They have not revealed the identity of the officer who may have shot Phillips.
