Arkansas falls flat in loss to Auburn

The Razorbacks see their bowl game hopes slip away in a rough home loss to Auburn.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Remember the overtime victory over Florida last Saturday?

If you're an Arkansas fan, hold on to that memory. Think about that overtime run by quarterback KJ Jefferson and the touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyrone Broden that clinched the program's first win in Gainesville.

Have those happy thoughts in your heart as you continue to read about this weekend's Arkansas game against Auburn.

Trust me, you'll need them. There will be no hurt feelings if you tap out after this sentence.

The Razorbacks (3-7, 1-6 SEC) lost to Auburn 48-10 at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on Saturday in a game that was somehow not as close as the final score would lead someone to believe.

Following a 12-yard touchdown run by Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne and a 74-yard punt return touchdown by cornerback Keionte Scott, Arkansas trailed 14-0 in the game's first five minutes.

The Hogs trailed 21-3 at the half and couldn't overcome the slow start, losing bowl eligibility for the first time since 2019.

The staggering display harkened back to some of the worst losses of the last decade from previous Arkansas coaching staff members, despite everyone's best efforts to move on.

Still with us? Are you sure you wouldn't instead picture Jefferson hugging interim offensive coordinator Kenny Guiton after playing his best football of the season and beating the Gators?

Alright, let's continue.

Coming out of the break, Auburn (6-4, 3-4 SEC) added three touchdowns in the third quarter to build a 48-3 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Arkansas quarterback Jacolby Criswell came in for Jefferson and tossed an 11-yard score to wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa for the Razorbacks' only touchdown with 14:35 remaining.

The Razorbacks were outgained on offense 512-255 yards and managed to convert only one third down on 12 attempts.

Jefferson completed 10 of 16 passes for 116 yards, while Criswell led the team in rushing with 64 yards on six carries.

Additionally, Jefferson is 44 passing yards and one passing touchdown shy of becoming the program's all-time passing leader.

Wide receiver Isaiah Staegna led all Hogs in receiver with 35 yards on one catch in the third quarter.

On defense, defensive back Alfahiym Walcott led the way for Arkansas with eight total stops and six solo tackles.

The Razorbacks return to action against Florida International on Nov. 18.  Coverage from Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium begins at 6:30 p.m. Central on ESPNU.
