JEFFERSON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — The Arkansas Board of Corrections announced on Tuesday afternoon that over the weekend the Department of Corrections began moving inmates into the vacant Tucker Work Release Facility.

The facility had once been used to house inmates who were participating in a reentry program. It will now be used to house 124 inmates who are assigned to the work-release program as well as minimum-security inmates.

This expansion is one of several others approved by the Board of Corrections to increase capacity and help reduce the number of inmates in county jails.

The following additions are also nearing completion:

  • 170 beds at the reconstructed White River Correctional Center in Batesville.
  • 70 additional beds at the Southeast Community Correction Center in Texarkana
  • 244 beds at the McPherson Unit in Newport
