JEFFERSON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — On Tuesday, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office arrested a deputy jailer with the W.C. "Dub" Brassell Adult Detention Center after staff found a "significant amount of contraband" in his possession.
According to authorities, 24-year-old Stephen Young was caught with the contraband shortly after he reported to work for the day.
"Deputy Young's arrest was a clear example of a serious breach of policy and a threat to public trust," Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods said. "Young's arrest, like others in the past, also speaks to our commitment to the public in pursuing charges against those who violate the public's trust and threaten the security of our detention facilities. Jail staff must understand that they will be caught, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent possible."
Young was taken into custody just before 6:30 a.m. for having over five ounces of a "green plant-like substance," which officers suspect to be marijuana and a rechargeable disposable vape.
After a more thorough search, they found other things, including tobacco, cigar wraps, clear plastic, Ziplock bags and two cell phones inside his vehicle.
Young was booked on felony probable cause for violations of the Arkansas Criminal Code, including furnishing, possessing, or using prohibited articles and possession of a controlled substance.
He would face a minimum sentence of five to 20 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections if convicted. He could also be subject to an "enhancement penalty," which would be a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of $10,000 at minimum.
