LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — On Thanksgiving Day many look forward to turkey and ham, but everyone knows the real showstopper is the dessert table.
One North Little Rock family said that this year, a must-have at their celebration will be "Pawpaw's pound cake."
It's a baked good that's filled with purpose and topped with the loving memories of Victor Montgomery.
Montgomery was known for the love, generosity, and kindness he showed toward the community especially the children at Joe T Robinson.
All of that was tragically taken away last year when he was hit and killed while on duty as a school security officer.
Now, his wife Alice is paying his lifestyle forward by making a difference in the community through her baking skills — and Victor's favorite dessert — pound cake.
Alice said it all came to her a couple of weeks ago, acknowledging that she wanted to make a difference in the community this Thanksgiving.
So, she decided to use the funds from her business "PawPaw's Poundcakes" and provide six families with a Thanksgiving meal.
"After we lost Vic, I said 'well I am going make these pound cakes and take the funds that I make off of them and put them to some good use,'" Alice said.
A pound cake is a staple in the Montgomery household, and those memories of "PawPaw" enjoying and eating every slice is the very thing connecting other families with theirs.
"To be able to see that he shared himself with others the same way that he shared himself with us is definitely a blessing," Monica Fountain said.
Fountain, the youngest daughter of Victor's, said this will make a full year without her dad, but it'll also be the second holiday he will miss.
"He is definitely cherished, he is definitely missed, and the only thing I regret is not being able to make more memories because we had such a fantastic life together," she said.
Fountain said what remains of him is the love he had for people, pound cake, but most importantly his family.
Although Victor is no longer here in the physical, Alice said she can't thank her husband enough for always showing up and never missing a moment.
"He lives in my heart and it's because of those pound cakes that I am able to do what I do because I just love giving back," Alice said.
