LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced that he was dropping out of the 2024 race for the White House, and ending his bid for reelection.
The decision came after some of Biden's Democratic allies asked for him to step aside following the debate on June 27, where the 81-year-old president sometimes trailed off, gave some nonsensical answers, and failed to call out the former president’s many falsehoods.
Since his announcement, Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take on Trump in the 2024 election and has encouraged his party to unite behind her.
Vice President Harris released a statement which said in part:
“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination. Over the past year, I have traveled across the country, talking with Americans about the clear choice in this momentous election. And that is what I will continue to do in the days and weeks ahead. I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”
President Biden plans to serve the remainder of his term in office which will come to an end on January 20, 2025.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term," President Biden wrote in a letter posted to his X account.
Following the announcement by President Biden, many Arkansas lawmakers both current and former, have taken to X to give their statements regarding the news:
