Ways Arkansas residents can report storm damage

With extensive damage to businesses and homes in each city, Benton County is encouraging residents to report their damage to the appropriate channels.

BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — After tornadoes hit Northwest Arkansas on May 26, extensive damage was reported across Benton County.

"Only thing I could equate [to this damage] is the Joplin tornado, but as far as this county, this is the worst we've ever had," Benton County Sheriff Shawn Holloway said.

With extensive damage to businesses and homes in each city, Benton County is encouraging residents to report their damage to the appropriate channels. This reporting can look different depending on a resident's situation.

Where to report damage

Insurance

If you have homeowners, renters, or auto insurance, file a claim with your insurance provider. In this claim, you should detail the damage with documents or photos.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Following a presidential disaster declaration from President Joe Biden, FEMA assistance is now available to Arkansas residents in Baxter, Benton, Boone, Madison, Marion, Fulton, and Randolph counties.

You can apply for FEMA assistance online, over the phone, or at an in-person FEMA Disaster Recovery Center. For more information on how to apply, click here

If you file with insurance, there is still an option to apply for FEMA assistance.

"You do not have to file your [insurance] claim prior to applying for FEMA disaster assistance, but you will be required to provide FEMA with your insurance settlement or denial before being considered for certain types of assistance," according to Benton County.

In the meantime, Benton County encourages residents to continue to record damage to their homes and belongings by making lists and taking photos. Recording these items will be helpful when working with your insurance or speaking with a FEMA inspector.

Although Benton County originally asked residents to report any damage to their homes or businesses directly after the storms, they say those reports are not tied to FEMA assistance. You must also submit an application to FEMA to acquire benefits and funds.
