Family of Little Rock man who died while in police custody hosts back-to-school event in his honor

It has been nearly 3 years since an Arkansas man died while in police custody. Now, his loved ones are hosting a back-to-school giveaway to keep his legacy alive.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — On Sunday afternoon, the Caffey family held a special back-to-school giveaway near Colonel Glenn in Little Rock to give back to the community as they work to hold on to a piece of their loved one.

Terence Caffey died in 2021 while in police custody after an incident that happened at a movie theater in Little Rock.

"We're just giving back school supplies, clothes, shoes, and food in honor of Terence Caffey. This is something he would do, something he would love to do," said Terence's sister, Crystal Caffey.

Caffey has been fulfilling her big sister duties by continuing Terence's legacy, which was his love and desire to help kids and the homeless.

"You know there's a lot of less fortunate families that are out here that may not can afford school supplies or clothing, nice shoes," she said. "We just want to stand in the gap with those families, and they can get free school supplies and food. Terence would want nothing more [than] for us to do this."

Though it has been nearly three years since Terence's death, his sister Crystal Caffey and Aunt Nicole Ewing continue to ask for answers and for accountability to be taken.

"This is a big part of keeping his memory alive, we're not just going to look at obituaries and review. We're going to actually come out here and stay out here, we're never going to stop," Ewing explained.

Caffey explained how the family is still greatly affected by Terence's death and they believe there could've been another outcome.

"Even with anything that they want to give, it would never bring my brother back, and we just let him live through us," she added.

Ewing said that although he is not physically here, she still sees his life in others. She adds that his giving spirit will live on in their family and also throughout the community.

"Terence went to school up the street and everything like that. So, it makes us feel good that we're actually helping the people that he may have run up, ran across in life, or crossed paths with, or anything like that," she explained. " It's really important to stay connected to the people that were connected with him. and the community of Little Rock was definitely connected to him."

The Caffey family explained that there are no updates on the legal status of this case but they will continue to host giveaways and events in honor of Terence Caffey.
