BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) - A community wanting to break away from what's in the headlines, Benton Police Department and Phi Beta Sigma are leading a meeting to bring their town closer together instead of apart.
The two groups are coming together tonight to get a better understanding of the different views and opinions they have in their community.
"The past few weeks people have been spewing out their opinions via social media but no one has really been doing anything," says Phi Beta Sigma fraternity member Aron Calvin.
Calvin says the meeting should help get an understanding of what law enforcement do on a day-to-day basis.
The community wishes to come together and be Benton strong.
"People have been talking about coming together and tonight we're actually doing it," says Police Chief Kirk Lane, "and I'm just expecting great things."
Chief Lane wants to address the safety in the city and ensure it remains safe for its residents.
He says, "there was some anxiety about what's coming out over the media and events in other cities. We haven't seen those types of events in the city, but there is some anxiety about it."
The importance of the relationship between communities and their police is what is being stressed at tonight's discussion.
