BENTON, Ark. — The Benton Police Department is sharing a word of caution for holiday shoppers as we get closer to Christmas.
Things purchased on Black Friday and Cyber Monday should be arriving soon, and as that happens, there's one thing Benton police Lt. Quinton Jackson can't stand.
Porch pirates.
"It's frustrating, and we don't want it to happen," Jackson said. "It happens because of the holiday season. They know more packages are out and about."
Porch pirates are people who swipe delivered packages while you're away. Benton authorities said they caught two pirates red-handed earlier this week.
"Deputies, they spotted them," Jackson said. "Then they could dump empty boxes and stuff like that."
Doorbell camera footage caught those two in the act. Some of the things taken may surprise you and were a little on the nose for the Grinch.
"You don't normally see a full Christmas tree still in the box," Jackson said.
According to Jackson, the two people arrested will be charged with a felony and admitted the cameras they were caught on may not deter some.
"That's just how brazen people seem," Jackson said. "They see the cameras, and they're hoping they're still unable to identify."
So, just in case, law enforcement recommends a few simple things to keep your gifts where they belong.
"Have a trusted friend if you're not going to be able to be home," Jackson said. "Some workplaces allow you to have packages delivered."
And there's one final message he has to share with those who think doing this is ok.
"It's the same thing you learn as a kid," Jackson said. "If it's not yours, don't touch it... keep your hands to yourself."
That felony charge could carry multiple years in prison if convicted.
