Juneteenth 2024: Here's a list of events in Central Arkansas

As Juneteenth quickly approaches, people across the country and in Arkansas will celebrate the monumental day that marked the freedom of enslaved people in the U.S.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — We're just over one week away from the Juneteenth holiday.

On June 19, many Americans across the country, including here in Arkansas will celebrate the holiday which marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were finally free. The Civil War had ended and two years had passed since President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth has been a sacred holiday to many people in Black communities for well over one-and-a-half centuries and was designated as a federal holiday in 2021.

It is typically celebrated by people gathering to enjoy barbecues, cookouts, parades, church events, and so much more.
