CONWAY, Ark. — The Conway Police Department asked the community for help in a hit-and-run investigation that injured James Conway on December 23, 2023.
Conway was riding his bike home from a family member's house when a northbound vehicle struck him on the trail near the Scott and Center Street intersection.
"For somebody to... just leave you on the side [of the] road like you're a hit dog and not apologize is not human," Conway said.
Conway said he could not move and was unsure where his phone was. All he knew was that he needed help immediately, but that's not what he received from the person who hit him.
"I was on top of the hood... fell on the ground," Conway said. "My bike was over here, and my motor over there."
Conway and his family filed a police report that day, hoping the suspect or someone who witnessed the incident would come forward.
"Our detectives have been out to the area, and they conducted a canvass to see if they could locate any cameras or any camera footage specifically involved in the incident," CPD Public Information Officer Matthew Boyd said. "At this time, nothing has been located."
Boyd said they currently have no suspects; all they have is the victim's testimony.
"The victim was able to tell us that the vehicle that struck him was white, but we're uncertain if it was a van, truck, or a car," Boyd said. "He also stated that the individual driving it had been a light-skinned black male."
Conway is now in a wheelchair from the incident and recovering from several surgeries on his legs. He said the whole process has emotionally affected him and his family.
"I don't want this person to receive an extreme punishment," Conway said. "I just want something that makes them think about what they did and for them never to do it again."
The Conway Police Department urges anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact Sgt. Wesbecher at (501) 450-6130.
