CONWAY, Ark. — The Quilts of Valor Foundation is working to make sure our veterans and services members sacrifices are not forgotten.
People across the country were quilting Saturday, Feb. 2 as a part of the organizations National Sew Day. Their goal is to honor as many veterans as they can with a quality made quilt.
Stitch by stitch, members of the Quilts of Valor Foundation sew together patriotic quilts for veterans touched by war.
Area members met in Conway for the organizations National Sew Day.
“Everybody across the country in the Quilts of Valor Foundation Sew and we make quilt tops for our veterans,” Conway group leader Ginny Musgrove said.
Their mission is to provide service members with a quilt to offer them a sense of warmth, and remind them that there are people who care.
“Our veterans don’t get enough recognition as it is and it’s just an honor for us to give these veterans something to let them know we love them,” Musgrove said.
Saturday, the group was able to honor 4 veterans with a quilt.
“It’s good to know that people do remember, and you know, for such long times,” army veteran Bobby G. Humphreys said.
Humphreys said his quilt will also honor soldiers who’ve passed on before him.
“We didn’t do anything much to deserve this, other people did more," Humphreys said. "A lot of people didn’t make it back and we have a lot of gratitude for them.”
Veterans and service members are nominated for a quilt on the organization’s website, and they make them year-round with the help of donations.
Each veteran gets a special ceremony.
“We have been to hospitals, we have been out in a parking lot in front of Kohl’s, we’ve been to nursing homes," Musgrove said. "We’ll go individually to the veteran’s home if he doesn’t want to be in a crowd.”
Since Quilts of Valor started in 2003, they've created over 200,000 quilts.
