Drivers in Arkansas concerned with I-30 after weeks of accidents

Following a string of crashes along I-30 over the past few weeks, drivers in Arkansas are now voicing their concerns with the interstate to traffic officials.

SALINE COUNTY, Ark. — In the span of just two weeks, multiple accidents along I-30 have caused both the east and westbound lanes to be at a standstill.

After years of dealing with the I-30 construction zone, drivers want to know when the project will be finalized.

Marlon Thomas is someone who drives his truck through the area daily and he said that while the roads are better than what they used to be, it can still be frightening to drive through.

He explained how he has to carry a heavy load on his truck and sits up higher than most drivers.

"Many people out here driving do not respect big trucks, resulting to us accommodating them," Marlon added.

The Saline County construction is a part of the Arkansas Department of Transportation's widening project that they have been working on for nearly five years.

Dave Parker, the Public Information Officer for ARDOT explained how they've corrected all of the previous concerns from the public, and now they've been asking drivers to do their part on the interstate.

He said that by eliminating all of the concerns made by previous contractors, the new ones have shown good work in the last few months.

They're actively working to get the project done by the end of the year.

As far as drivers being stuck for hours in traffic, Parker explained how this is a problem that applies to any construction zone during an accident.

"When you're trying to get a vehicle out of there or moved it just takes a while, you only have a certain amount of space," Parker described.

The most important message for everyone is to follow distance guidelines, drive the speed limit, stay buckled, and focus on the road.
