Early voting is underway for this year's Arkansas primary elections. One of the biggest races to watch is for the the republican nomination for Governor. Governor Asa Hutchinson is being challenged by Jan Morgan. Four democrats are fighting for the chance to take on Congressman French Hill in November.
In Pulaski County, 996 voters voted on the first day of early voting.
“To be able to carry out a civic duty means the world to me,” said 18-year-old Chris Kingsby who voted for the first time. “I’m extremely excited about it.”
Kingsby led the Arkansas March for Our Lives. He believes with the number of rallies and marches across the country, more young voters will head to the polls.
“We have to turn out to vote this year,” he said. “We have to show our elected politicians and candidates that we mean business when we say we will vote you out.”
Total voter turnout for the most recent mid-term primary elections are as follows: 21% in 2014, 29% in 2010, and 22% in 2006, according to the Arkansas Secretary of State.
To compare that with presidential years, the primary turnout was: 38% in 2016, 22% in 2012, and 18% in 2008.
Contact your county clerk for early voting hours and locations. You must have a picture I.D. to vote. If you don't get a chance to vote early, Election Day is Tuesday the 22nd.
