LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A Little Rock mother and son are celebrating the release of their new co-authored book.
10-year-old Liam and his mom Shamim released the book titled 'Ella The Banker,' which based on Liam's 8-year-old sister.
The story is told through the eyes of Ella and follows the adventures of an elementary school class as they learn all about the world of banking.
Liam said that the story came about following the inspiration that he got from his younger sister, who also dreams of becoming a banker just their mother Shamim.
'The Banker' tackles the issue of underrepresentation in the commercial banking industry. The book looks to encourage girls to pursue a career in the industry, as women, especially women of color are so frequently underrepresented in the field.
Liam and his mother got together in January of 2023, with the goal of bringing the book to life.
At the time that the two had the idea to co-author a book together, Liam was only in 4th grade.
“Ella The Banker” represents the possibilities for young girls to see, believe and become whatever they choose,” said Shamim Okolloh, co-author of 'The Banker.'
The book also serves as an opportunity for Liam and Shamim to recap their family's history.
“Writing this book with my son was a way for us to share our family’s story, enhance children’s understanding of banks while contributing to the broader goal of empowering future generations of girls to consider commercial banking,” she said.
The book has already had an immediate impact, catching the eye of Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. who declared Jan. 9 as "Ella The Banker Day."
