LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Football season is back, and fans are excited to see their favorite teams play. However, some unsettled weather threatens to impact some upcoming games.

With a big opening weekend of high school football, there is a chance of scattered thunderstorms this evening. Some of these storms could contain strong wind gusts and heavy rain. Showers will diminish a bit later on Friday night and redevelop over the weekend. Here’s a look at the Salt Bowl Forecast:

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible during the Labor Day holiday weekend here in Arkansas as a couple of cold fronts interact with a warm & humid air mass.

Temperatures are not expected to be as hot as they were due to the clouds and the chance of scattered rain over the weekend. Although we're not expecting a washout, storms that do occur this weekend will have the potential to produce strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall in a short amount of time.

People who are out on lakes and waterways for the weekend need to keep an eye on the sky for thunderstorms as they develop.

Scattered showers and storms will be prevalent through Monday with drier conditions settling by Tuesday.

How could this impact me?

Scattered rain showers are expected on Friday, and an isolated thunderstorm is expected in or near central Arkansas.

However, any showers or thunderstorms should push through quickly.

What do I need to do to stay safe?

Here are some tips for staying safe in the heat:

  • Stay hydrated:
    • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
    • Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages as they can dehydrate you.
  • Wear appropriate clothing:
    • Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing. Dark colors absorb more heat, and tight clothing can hinder your body’s ability to cool down.
  • Check on others:
    • Pay attention to elderly family members, friends, and neighbors, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, and make sure they are staying cool and hydrated.
  • Know the signs of heat-related illnesses:
    • Be aware of symptoms like heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache, which can indicate heat exhaustion.
    • In severe cases, heatstroke can occur, characterized by a high body temperature, confusion, and loss of consciousness. If you suspect heatstroke, seek medical attention immediately.

Here are some tips for staying safe during thunderstorms:

  • Find shelter:
    • Seek shelter in a sturdy building or a car.
    • If there’s no shelter, crouch down with your feet together to minimize your contact with the ground.
  • Avoid tall objects:
    • Stay away from tall structures like trees, flagpoles, and utility poles, as they can attract lightning.
  • Stay low:
    • If you’re in an open area and cannot reach shelter, drop to your knees and bend forward, keeping your head low to the ground.
