Crews work to put out fire at Villas on Sixty Fifth apartment complex in Little Rock

According to reports from the Little Rock Fire Department, the Villas on Sixty Fifth on W. 65th Street were evacuated due to a fire.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Little Rock Fire Department extinguished a fire Wednesday morning at the Villas on Sixty Fifth apartment complex on West 65th Street.

People were asked to evacuate from their apartments, and first responders reported no injuries from the fire.

"It could have very well... turned out differently," Little Rock Fire Capt. Doug Coffman said.

Crews arrived at the scene at about 8:15 a.m. to put out the fire, but said it quickly spread to the roof.

At one point, Coffman said nearly 10 fire trucks and close to 50 firefighters had worked to contain the fire.

"It was a good fire," Coffman said. "It was a lot of fire load."

Coffman said it started in one of the apartments upstairs.

"Our crews responded, got on [the] scene quickly and they began the extinguishment process," Coffman said. "I believe they got that part... put it out pretty quick, but the fire did advance up into the attic area, and it has now burned through the roof line."

Villas on Sixty Fifth tenant Bobby Poindexter was waking up when he learned his building was on fire.

"Two or three firefighters had kicked our door in, and I had run and got my cousin and my brother, Doug," Poindexter said. "I told him that it was a fire, and we got out of there real fast... I didn't know what to do... just got my shoes, hopped up, and went."

Now that the fire is out, tenants like Poindexter are figuring out the next steps.

"We'll go see what we have left or whatever," Poindexter said. "I don't think it's going to be nothing."

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but officials said the road has since reopened after being closed for several hours.

Red Cross said they've assisted several families.
