Flash flooding impacting multiple Arkansas counties

Flash flooding in parts of the state has led to road closures and water rescues as crews work to ensure Arkansans can travel the roads safely.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Flash flooding has impacted several Arkansas counties, leading to dozens of road closures and even a harrowing high-water rescue.

High water levels on some roads have gone down, but with more rain on the way later today, the flooding threat isn't over yet.

According to the Saline County Emergency Management, over 25 roads dealt with overnight flooding, including Sardis Road, portions of Highway 5, and Zuber Road.

Officials confirmed that they are continuing to monitor the situation and working to keep cars off any flooded roads. If you do find yourself out on the road, it's important to keep safety top of mind.

In a Facebook post shared by the Lonsdale Fire Department, officials showed the dangers drivers could face after they responded to a rescue call for a vehicle trapped underwater.

Crews were dispatched to Turtle Creek at I-30 on the north service road where two people were trapped in the vehicle.

One person was able to swim out, however, crews had to act quickly to rescue the other person trapped inside.

Water crews were able to smash the passenger rear glass and successfully pull the person out of the vehicle just as it started going under.

The water crew was then thrown life jackets and a rope bag to secure them for the land crew to pull back to the dry roadway.

This serves as a good reminder to "turn around, don't drown", especially as Arkansas expects to see more rain and possible flooding conditions.

People in Grant County also need to be alert for any standing water.

The City of Sheridan was forced to close a portion of Little Creek Cutoff Road after part of it went underwater last night.

The road has been reopened, but city officials still advise drivers to exercise caution.

Further south in Malvern, high water-covered roads caused school cancellations as buses were unable to travel their usual routes.

The Malvern School District advised families to stay home and avoid driving in flooded areas.
