Former Arkansas State Senator Joyce Elliott hospitalized after suffering stroke

Former Arkansas State Senator Joyce Elliott's family confirmed that she is recovering after suffering a recent stroke while on a trip to Dallas, Texas.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — According to reports, former Arkansas State Senator Joyce Elliott has been hospitalized after suffering a recent stroke while on a trip to Dallas, Texas.

Her family stated that Senator Elliott underwent two days of treatment in Texas before being transferred to Little Rock. She had a successful surgery and is currently focused on recovering.

She is expected to begin a rehabilitation program as soon as possible.

Senator Elliott is an Arkansas native known for her years of service to the Natural State and tireless work as a civil rights activist. She currently serves as the Executive Director of Get Loud Arkansas working to increase civic participation.

"The entire state should lift up Senator Joyce Elliott," said Democratic Party of Arkansas Chair Grant Tennille. "Her love of Arkansas and her compassion for its people have motivated thousands to public service and advocacy for decades. We all have a better home because of her selflessness. Today, we are rallying behind her, praying for her health, and respecting her privacy."

Attorney General Tim Griffin issued the following statement:

"I am deeply saddened to learn that former State Sen. Joyce Elliott has suffered a stroke. Despite our political differences, I have great respect for her passion as a public servant and her many years of service as a teacher. I ask you to join me in praying for her speedy and complete recovery."
