FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) said that they have identified the vehicle involved in a hit-and-run that left an elderly woman hospitalized on Sept. 7.
The woman was walking her dog on South 21st Street when the incident took place. According to a close friend of the victim, the crash left her with broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a broken arm, a broken leg, and broken ankles, among other injuries. The woman was still hospitalized on Sept. 12 in an out-of-area hospital facing a long road to recovery.
After weeks of investigation, officials said they have not only identified the involved vehicle but also interviewed the registered owners.
At 2:15 p.m. on Sept. 20, FSPD announced that an arrest had been made in the case.
James Edward Swinson, 50, was arrested in connection to the incident.
"Following a two-week investigation, investigators were able to identify the vehicle involved and the registered owner(s). After interviewing multiple parties, Swinson was arrested and taken to the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held on charges of leaving the scene of an accident in which an injury or death occurred, habitual offender, petition to revoke, and contempt-willful disobedience," FSPD said in a release.
