LITTLE ROCK, Ark — Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders is temporarily naming Mena as the state's capital for a day this month.
Mena is being recognized as the state's temporary capital on Oct. 20, as the governor looks to celebrate the city which was founded in the late 19th century.
This makes Mena the first city to be named "capital of the day" under Gov. Sanders. The city will also temporarily serve as Arkansas's seat of government as well.
Gov. Sanders said that the "capital for a day" initiative is meant to highlight "great cities around Arkansas" as well as ensuring equitable services are provided to all Arkansans.
Mena is described as the "county seat of Polk County" according to the governor, and was able to grow quickly due to railroad tracks that were laid in the western portion of the state.
The governor now refers to Mena as currently being "Arkansas’ Ouachita National Forest" and acknowledged its importance in attracting tourists.
