Hearne ISD holds special meeting to discuss future, TEA compliance

Hearne ISD held a special meeting Monday night in an effort to turn the district around and avoid more problems.

HEARNE, Texas - Hearne ISD held a special meeting Monday night in an effort to turn the district around and avoid more problems.

The Texas Education Agency continues to investigate the district and a recent forensic audit revealed large-scale financial corruption.

The meeting's agenda said the school board would consult with the district's attorney in executive session regarding the employment of Raul Nuques, the Hearne ISD superintendent who started back in January.

However, when the board came out of the executive session, the president said they took no action on the agenda item and Nuques would continue to work for the district as usual.

Regardless, some people at the meeting wanted Nuques to quit. Others said it's the school board that needs to pull things together.

"It seems to me that there's maybe some petty arguments or disagreements or agendas, " said resident Cindy Wallace. "I don't think they're all focusing on the kids."

The board also decided to give a criminal trespass warning to one of the board members but the district's attorney declined to say why.

To comply with the TEA, the board also approved turnaround programs. One program is for the elementary school and the other is for the middle school.

In order to save money in light of the forensic audit, the district also cut several positions and will save nearly $450,000. However, the district is still not where it needs to be to achieve a balanced budget.
