How to stay safe during severe weather

Here are three general concepts to keep in mind while preparing for the threat of severe weather.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - With much of Arkansas under an "enhanced risk" of severe weather Friday there's a chance of high winds, hail and tornadoes throughout the afternoon and evening.

Here are three general concepts to keep in mind while preparing for the threat of severe weather.

#1 Stay Informed

  • Catch the latest forecast during THV11 newscasts. Our meteorologists will also interrupt programming to bring you the latest information on tornado warnings in Central Arkansas.

  • If you're on the go or lose power, the THV11 Weather app can keep you updated via Ed Buckner's forecast and an interactive radar.

  • A NOAA weather radio (link: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/ ) broadcasts official National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • #2 Stay Safe

    • Whether you're in your home or at work, know where to go in the event of a tornado warning.

  • If you don't have a basement or storm shelter, find an interior room with no windows on the lowest floor.

  • Mobile homes are not safe in tornadoes. You'll want to find a sturdy structure nearby.

  • The American Red Cross suggests if you are in a high-rise building, go to a hallway in the center of the building, as you may not have enough time to go to the lowest floor.
  • #3 Stay Prepared

Make sure your safe place includes access to emergency supplies. That includes items like:

    • First Aid Kit
    • Flashlight
    • Bottled water
    • Blankets
    • Boots
    • Medications
    • Phone charger
