Investigation underway after death of Baxter County Jail inmate

An investigation is underway after a Baxter County inmate passed away at Baxter Health ER on Jan. 6 after being transported by ambulance from the detention center.

BAXTER COUNTY, Ark. — The Baxter County Sheriff's Office and the Arkansas State Police are investigating the death of a Baxter County inmate who passed away on January 6.

According to reports, officials noticed that 51-year-old Larry Charles Babin of Cotter had not moved or changed positions for some time while performing routine hourly cell checks.

Upon entering the cell, Babin was confirmed to be alive and breathing, however, he would not respond to any stimuli. An ambulance was called to transport Babin to Baxter Health ER where he passed away later that morning.

The body was sent to the Arkansas State Medical Examiner's Office in Little Rock for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

Babin had been booked into the detention center on December 30, 2023, after being arrested on traffic charges including DWI, and on a misdemeanor contempt warrant from the Baxter County District Court. He had been scheduled to re-appear in District Court on January 11.

An investigation is currently underway, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
