Officials in Jefferson County vote down money to fix roads

While people are still wondering why the roads aren't being fixed, the Jefferson County Quorum Court debated the validity of a previous committee meeting.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — Another month means another Jefferson County Quorum Court meeting and one of the biggest questions still lingering is why the roads aren't being fixed.

At Monday night's agenda meeting, there were a couple of items that would allocate more money into the road department, but discussion over whether or not a committee meeting was held illegally took precedence for the justices.

"If I wasn't rooted here, I'd be gone in a heartbeat," said Shirley Clark.

She was one of the people who spoke to the justices of peace at the Jefferson County meeting and she explained that Harden North Road had terrible potholes that needed to be fixed.

However, Jefferson County officials had a bigger issue to discuss at this month's agenda meeting— whether or not a finance committee held last week was properly conducted.

During the finance committee, Justice Ted Harden adjourned the meeting but continued to conduct business afterward.

The entirety of the full quorum court agenda was of those items passed after the finance committee was adjourned. Some justices felt they couldn't in good conscience vote on those items, including money for the road department.

"The shape the roads are in... we need to get it done. This money is in the road department. We just need to move it over, so they can begin to use it," said Justice Conley Byrd.

The items related to the roads and most everything else on the agenda failed.

As it stands, there is no money in the budget for this year to do any road repairs.
