LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Little Rock Ward 2 Director Ken Richardson is hospitalized and has undergone "multiple life-threatening surgeries" over the past few months, the city said Thursday.

Richardson's absence at the Little Rock board meetings raised questions from the public, but the director addressed concerns and said he's hoping to return to work when the time is right.

"I have not abandoned you," Richardson said. "I look forward to resuming the work I have previously done and completing the projects we started together."

Before returning, Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. said Richardson must clear "significant hurdles" in his recovery.

"Director Ken Richardson's dedication to the city... and his commitment to his constituents remains steadfast," the City of Little Rock said. "We all look forward to his full recovery and return to public service."

While Richardson remains hospitalized, the Richardson family expressed gratitude and thankfulness for how far he's come on his road to recovery. They asked the community to pray for Richardson and respect their privacy during this challenging time.

Richardson's family didn't specify what led to the surgeries.
