Little Rock man involved in police shootout found not guilty due to mental illness

A Pulaski County Circut Court judge cleared a 50-year-old Little Rock man of any criminal wrongdoing after shooting at police officers in February.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — On Thursday, a Pulaski County Circuit Court judge cleared a 50-year-old Little Rock man of any criminal wrongdoing due to mental illness.

James Mosby, who has schizophrenia, is said to have provoked a shootout with Little Rock police shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 in the 5000 block of West 65th Street.

According to the Little Rock Police Department, authorities arrived on the scene, saw Mosby yelling in the parking lot and approached him to de-escalate the situation. When Mosby told Little Rock police not to approach, he "pulled out a gun and fired at them multiple times."

Little Rock police said the officers took cover and returned fire while Mosby continued shooting and yelling.

Mosby was then struck and fell to the ground, but stood up moments later and continued to yell at the officers. He then placed his gun on the hood of a nearby car.

Officers were then able to take Mosby into custody after he placed his gun on the hood of a nearby car.
