Little Rock mayor pitches new sales tax, touts public safety efforts

During Thursday night's State of the City address, Mayor Frank Scott Jr. announced several new plans and what he hopes to accomplish in 2024.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — "We are going to be even more intentional about getting things done. Why? Because results are for the rock," said Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr.

That was Mayor Scott's slogan for his State of the City address: Results for the Rock.

Along with that slogan came new ideas for the city in 2024.

One of the biggest announcements made during the address was Mayor Frank Scott Jr's third attempt to pass a new sales tax. The proposal will focus on public safety, infrastructure, and the port.

"More results require more capital [and] more money," said Mayor Scott.

Public safety was once again the mayor's number one priority and he celebrated 2023's decrease in homicides and the addition of more 911 dispatchers.

In 2024, he wants police to focus on areas that have higher crime and he explained how the city has been working with Entergy to add more street lights.

He also announced a new initiative called "Eyes on the Rock." The city will provide signs and support for businesses that partner with LRPD to add camera access to the real-time crime center.

The mayor also said in 2023 Little Rock was 59% of the job creation in Arkansas.

To keep this momentum up he hopes to highlight minority-owned businesses with an online map and he will expand the summer youth employment program year-round.

The mayor has also been working with Director Antwan Phillips to propose a city ordinance that will allow code enforcement to have more power to hold landlords accountable for their buildings.

"It breaks my heart that residents of our great city are paying rent, but still have no running water, their places are infested with roaches, and sick of black mold. Enough is enough," Mayor Scott explained.

The mayor also introduced new employee benefits including a pay on demand where you can get your earned city wages before pay day and paid paternal leave.
