Little Rock residents question whether new sidewalks meet accessibility standards

Frustrations are bubbling for one Little Rock neighborhood that believes new home developments could be violating ADA regulations.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Pettaway neighborhood is known for its accessibility and walkable area, but recently, some duplexes were developed doing just the opposite.

"They were not pleased with that, and then later, I got calls from former presidents saying that they had gotten complaints," Pettaway Neighborhood Association President Ne'Nita Doniell Clayborn said.

Clayborn said several neighbors are concerned about the development of the sidewalks.

The driveways are too short, causing any parked car to block the sidewalk.

This is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which states that driveways should not encroach on the sidewalk.

"I can tell you that this is something that's not acceptable for the city," Little Rock Ward 1 Director Virgil Miller said.

According to city officials, the developer obtained an ADA design variance approved by city staff, allowing the sidewalks to be created this way.

The city said they will work to find a suitable solution.

"We are going to address this issue," Miller said. "We want it corrected. We want our neighborhoods to be walkable."

The city also said there has not been a final inspection done on the sidewalk. There is no timeline for when that will get done.
