LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Due to the winter weather, the Little Rock School District has canceled classes for a few days.
During the pandemic, the school would offer alternative methods of instruction or AMI days, allowing kids to do schoolwork at home.
However, after Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the state legislature banned AMI days this past year, LRSD is now deciding how to make up the snow days.
According to Little Rock school board member Vicki Hatter, the administration has two options to make up for the missed classes.
They can make up those days at the end of the year or break down the missed days into minutes and add additional time to the end of each school day.
"What parent would still want to worry about school in June?" Hatter said. "I know I wouldn't."
By law, students must have 178 days of instruction, which is why some teachers' AMI days worked great. This meant they could still have class without making up the day later.
Central High Spanish Teacher Marco Dorfsman said the tech works now, and the days missed won't count the same if they're made up in late May.
"The fact is, by now, we had ironed out all the kinks," Dorfsman said.
Former teacher Jamie Sims said students should learn in a classroom, not at home.
"I think going back to the traditional days," Sims said. "Letting these kids have a real snow day is not going to hurt anyone."
LRSD planned at least five inclement weather days after the projected last school day on May 29. The final class day will be May 31 if no more days are called off.
