Little Rock hopes to expand beloved park

The Hindman Park golf course closed in 2019, but the city is now developing new ideas to redesign the area.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The City of Little Rock is unveiling a master plan for its beloved Hindman Park.

The park was most notable for its golf course, which closed in 2019.

"This is kind of what I call wild, wild, west when we shut it down," Little Rock Parks and Recreation Director Leland Couch said.

For almost 50 years, the Hindman Park golf course was one of the most popular places in Arkansas for the sport. Since its closure five years ago, it has been transformed into a disc golf course.

Little Rock's Parks and Recreation Department has been gathering new ideas for the course, creating a master plan for the future. Preliminary plans include expanding disc golf and adding mountain biking.

The master plan is almost finished, but the city wants to hear what the public thinks.

On Thursday, people gathered to share their thoughts and see the plans. The meeting was specifically about mountain biking.

"The opportunities that exist to further our growth... it's better than nothing," said Norm Berner with Keep Little Rock Beautiful. "Let's give it a chance."

Although there's no timeline for implementing the plans, the city is waiting to see if it will receive more funding from the 1% sales tax increase on the November ballot.

If passed by voters, this project will receive $14 million.

"If not, we will at least have a plan that we can now look at and apply for grants... use some other funding," Couch said.

The next meeting is in two weeks. It will focus on disc golf. After that, a general meeting is planned.
