LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Little Rock Zoo announced the birth of a baby chimpanzee to first-time mother Kianga overnight.
Kianga is 17 and has been at the zoo since 2020 after being transferred on a breeding recommendation from the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo.
Since she's a first-time mother, there's an increased risk for complications with the birth, however, zoo officials confirmed that the pair are doing well, and Kianga is showing good maternal behaviors.
The public viewing area of the chimpanzee yard will be temporarily blocked off for public access to allow mom and baby time to adjust over the next few days.
