Little Rock School District board meets after superintendent resigns

Just days after Dr. Jermall Wright suddenly resigned from his position as superintendent, LRSD held a special board meeting to determine their next steps.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Just a few days after Little Rock School District Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright suddenly resigned from his position, LRSD held a special board meeting to determine the next steps.

However, after the nearly two-hour-long meeting, no decisions were made.

The meeting began with parents sharing public comments with school board members where they asked for Dr. Wright to stay on the job and criticized tense past meetings.

One parent described past board meetings by explaining how there's oftentimes a lot of drama going on.

"There's so much drama, they don't even know how to take it. It's reality TV in our home," they said.

"I have been more than discouraged by your display, Miss Hatter, and your display, Miss Morning. I have been more than disappointed because when it comes to leadership, heavy is the head that wears the crown," said parent, Angela Mull.

Board members Vicki Hatter and Sandrekkia Morning both declined to interview after Monday night's meeting. Meanwhile, Mull plans to come back to every meeting to voice both her concerns and support moving forward.

"If I can be an example for my, especially for our youngest child, who is a junior at Parkview, I want to be that example that being involved is most important. That's where change starts, even if it's just a little bit of a time," Hull described.

Board members went into a lengthy executive session, where they discussed Wright's resignation, a potential replacement, and the possible disciplining of a board member.

However, the board did not say which board member they referred to.

While board member Greg Adams shared that Dr. Wright's sudden resignation came as a surprise, he hopes for more unity among leadership down the line.

"I think that some of the people's concerns are that we as a board need to find ways to work better as a team. And I think that there's a consensus about that how to get there, to work better as a team, is something that we're going to be working on," Adams described.

Board members will have another chance to discuss the next steps after the superintendent's resignation at their regular board meeting on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Dr. Wright said he plans to stay on in his role until the board figures out a replacement plan.
