MORRILTON, Ark. (KTHV) – The mayor of Morrilton said part of the city is currently being evacuated.

Mayor Stewart Nelson said a natural gas leak that started near Oak Street (Highway 95) and Rock Street has the Morrilton Fire Department taking precaution while trying to correct it. They're asking residents in the surrounding area to evacuate.

At least one city block evacuated and traffic was diverted away from the area. The evacuations began around 11 a.m., and the city does not currently have an estimate on when people can return home.

Nelson said the leak began as Entergy was cleaning a pole, and workers somehow cut a 4-inch gas line. While much of the town does smell like gas, a breeze coming through is expected to clear most of the fumes soon.

As of 2:30 p.m., Nelson said the gas was still leaking and Entergy was working to stop the leak and disperse the gas using fans.
