AMITY, Ark. — A mountain lion was spotted in a small Arkansas town this week, the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission (AGFC) confirmed on Thursday.
The mountain lion sighting was confirmed to be in Amity, Arkansas, which is in Clark County.
AGFC said that the sighting was first reported by a hunter, who had observed the animal on a game camera. From there, biologists with AGFC worked to investigate and confirmed that the report was credible.
AGFC stated that mountain lions aren't as common in Arkansas as they used to be, saying that the animals had lived throughout the state until 1920.
Despite this, AGFC said that several sightings of mountain lions in Arkansas have been reported over the years.
Since 2010, there have been 23 confirmed sightings of mountain lions in parts of the Natural State.
Arkansas Game and Fish said that mountain lions are typically solitary, shy, reclusive, and rarely attack humans and would rather avoid people instead.
As for this most recent mountain lion sighting, there's no information on where the animal might have traveled from or how long it had been in Arkansas.
